11. What factors influence what you desire in life? (Think of forces such as: economic, social, historical, geographical, personal, experiential, cultural, religious,, etc.)
The media, in my opinion, is the greatest influence of modern society. With that I belive that the media openly influences what we think, and being surrounded with the pressures of consumerism to buy the latest gadgets or to pay for the best presents on Christmas causes our desires to be material based.
On the flip side normal people who are educated know what ads are pointed towards weak minded Americans. And are meant just to get them money, and not to benifit anyone but themselves. Educated people don't succum to the lure of shiny colours or attractive models, but instead look at price and need when buying somthing.
As a proud American I believe that it should be easy for everyday people to own guns. This, in a way, could be a historical force that causes me to want to own a gun because it was on the original top 10 laws for this country (bill of rights). In other countries such as England,which doesn't allow civilians to own. guns, might not have the same forces to influence them.
On the other hand he constitution was made to formulate a perfect country. The idea of civilians owning guns backs up the emergency plan of the goverment having too much power and then causing people to revolt. With the assurance to guns we're hard wired to is plan. We're also hard wired to the life of standing militia, for civilians to be able to stand up to forgein forces or enemies.
16. Do certain professions have an obligation to be more socially responsible than others? Do some professions require people to be more selfish and focused on their individual desires?
The best example I can think of that would describe a profession that requires a selfish desire would be lawyers. Lawyers are paid to defend, in a lot of cases, criminals. Lawyers might well know that their client is responsible for; rape, murder, and other horrible things. At the same time lawyers, as they are paid, need to try to keep the murders and rapists out of jail.
On the other hand lawyers think they study and practice law is essential becuase without lawyers we couldn't have fair trials, and they're essential to having a goverment like we have.
On the other side of the spectrum I find that policemen have to be the set standard of society. You might say politicians or bicycle repairmen but the public eye is constantly on police. Policemen go through academy use and study society just to be able to set the example. Policemen keep the peace in the mist of chaos, or at least are suppose to. Policemen aren't suppose to put themselves above people, or anything. The other profession I'd think would possible be better would be off service soldiers. If you ever see a soldier on a place you'd know that they're ridiculously polite and will help you with your bad and everything.
Police officers are never always loyal or good. They're talks about codes of silence that police officers unfairly have. That they'd never turn in a fellow police officer for somthing they'd do. Police officers also can be corrupt and be he opposite of law abiding.
Christian, the points you have made are very precise and I like the ideas you used in order to back your points up. In the first question I believe you should have incorporporated more things into it instead of just on the media and politics. Try to incorporate stuff that influence what you desire in life. Also try to contradict and talk about how desire is both negative and positive.
