My father named me, he has named over a dozen people possibly, when he was 3 he got to name his younger brother, and then in the following years named his 2 sisters, he named several of my cousins although their parents won't admit it. So i consider my dad to be a professional namer, and with the blessing of each of the names he had picked out there is a story.
"Christian"
Like most of my name Christian has danish roots, well not completely. All kings of Denmark since the beginning of time have had the first name of Fredrick or Christian, so its a super common name in Denmark and a favorite of my Dad's.
My Mom wanted me to be named Agustious, I swear my dad should be a national hero just for preventing that.
I'm not religious but my family is very christian, I went to catholic school when I was young, and of course the word "Christian" flies out of their mouth as much as the word Jesus so i always had to be alert and always had to be sure i wasn't being scolded.
"Edward"
My grandfather on my mom's side, he was an architect and as a partner at his firm. His last name was Connell, and the firm's name was Swanky-Hayden-Connell, you could find several plaques with his name on it across New York, his most famous work was the restoration of the statue of Liberty, which the original blueprints hangs in my room. So overall he was a pretty good guy to name a grandson after.
"William"
William Dewart is my great grandfather on my father's mother's side. He was the original editor of the New York Sun, and was one of the original group of millionaires in New York alongside Rockefeller and Carnegie the Dewart family owned the 8th largest fortune in american history, a fortune that ran out in two generations, leaving my dad to be a working man, which I'm sure he'd rather be. There still is a stock certificate in his living room good for 10 thousand shares, worth at that time and adjusted to inflation to over 125 million dollars
"Krogh"
It's a name, I've never met anyone with the same last name. So i call it pretty unique.
As the lore surrounding my family goes is that back hen vikings ruled the earth and pillaging was a right protected by spears there was a family called Krogstatter, and they chilled in the great white north of Norway, and somehow they ended up settling on a small island off the coast of Denmark called Lolland, I've spent some time on this island and there isn't anything special about it, it's cold and beachy.
Anyway like everyone in America my great grandparents immigrated through Ellis island, i think, and started a family under the name "Krog" because Kroghstatter is apparently a ridiculous name to keep when starting a new life. My grandparents were pretty ok since great grandfather Krog married a Miss Emily Dewart who's parents started the New York Sun, which was a pretty important newspaper that rivaled the New York Times at it's height.
The story goes on and goes through several mansions and resumes with my Dad, My Dad is an Interesting fellow. Since i didn't clarify before the Pronunciation of Krogh currently is Ka-Row-Gah, before my dad stepped in to end the horrible injustice of the Pronunciation of Krog being Ka-Ra-Gah. My dad stepped in shortly after the birth of my sister and changed the spelling of the last name from Krog to Krogh, so on many official documents my name is Christian Krog
So That's my name "Christian Edward William Krogh" I like my name, i couldn't think of myself as any other name, it's truly who I am.
There is a really great flow to this, Chris. It has your own personality and spark too it with clever wit and humor. Your voice comes out really well in it and not only that, but the nice structure keeps it just as unique as your name. I can tell it is extremely well thought out and the passage keeps the reader very engaged. Despite a few grammar mistakes, the flow is really nice through the history of your name and it made me want to just keep reading.
ReplyDeleteChris you did really well with this. I loved how you were able to give a little story and a background history on how you obtained each of your names. You explained very well and when i read your blog i get the feeling that you really like your name. So good for you!
